New scholars chosen for GBF China Scholarship Program

Forty of the brightest young minds from around the country are once again set to embark on a cross-cultural experience of a lifetime as they discover the language, dynamics, and booming economy of China through the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) China Scholarship Program. Established to empower promising young professionals with insights into the successes of China, the 10-month program aims to yield future Filipino leaders who can initiate efforts to uplift our country. Now on its second run, this year’s program has gathered a very promising class of achievers and outstanding professionals from around the country. This batch of future leaders will spend time at the prestigious Fudan University in Shanghai. GBF has also partnered with the Confucius Institute of the Ateneo de Manila to prepare the scholars for their full immersion in China. GBF chairman of the board John Gokongwei Jr. is a staunch believer in developing the potential of the youth to help them become world-class professionals and socially responsible visionaries. “This year’s talented young leaders have the intellect, energy, and passion to make an impact here in the country. It is my hope that when they come home, they will have greater experience and will be able to serve the country more,” Gokongwei said. He also believes that being globally competitive in these modern times means emulating not only western models but the best eastern practices as well.

For the scholars, the program opens the doors to new perspectives and inspires them to dream up a better future for the country. “The program can instill hope and inspiration for us to pursue excellence in all our endeavors, to be catalysts of change, and most of all to exceed our limits to the brink,” said Atty. Fritz Ritchie N. Avila, president of this year’s batch. “The program can truly change a scholar’s perspective on life and realign the young generation’s character. It will teach us not to settle for mediocrity as we do more than what is expected of us.” With the opportunity to fly to Shanghai for an all-expense-paid scholarship at the celebrated Fudan University, the scholars truly value the chance given to them. “We realize that we are so lucky to have been chosen to be part of this program. One could only imagine that there are many young citizens out there who would want to be in our shoes because it’s rare that young Filipinos are given this splendid opportunity,” Avila said.

International Students Studying in China

Currently, China has already become one of the most important countries for overseas study by students all over the world, and now, there are approximately 230,000 international students in China. In 2010, China. Scholarship Council planed to offer 20,000 quotas of Chinese Government Scholarship for international students to studying in China, which are 2,000 quotas more than 2009. In 2009, Chinese government made some solutions to help international students to confront the financial crisis, such as expanding the quota of Chinese Government Scholarship by 33.8% higher than it in 2008, giving financial aid to 500 self-funding international students, motivating universities to establish scholarships by them own, and supporting universities to make English-medium programs or courses taught by other foreign language. Those worked well and had positive and effective result in 2009, and it is believed that it would be done better in 2010.

Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan), one of some 50 bilateral organizations in the world established specifically to administer the program outside the U.S. Hsu told CNA he was surprised to find out that he had been granted the three-year, US$240,000 scholarship last October because he had failed his first bid in 2009. Hsu plans to focus on nanotechnology and would like to apply the results of his research to the development of solar energy, especially solar cells. He expressed hope that he will be able to use what he learns in the U.S. to help Taiwan's scientific development. Hsu, a researcher at Academia Sinica, Taiwan's top research institute, does not fit the traditional perception of a “good student” in Taiwan as he does not want to be a “nerd” who does nothing but study and conduct scientific experiments.

Student awarded Fulbright scholarship in China

A Taiwan-educated student has been awarded a U.S. State Department-funded International Fulbright Science and Technology Award Ph.D. scholarship and will enroll in Stanford University this fall to study nanotechnology. Hsu Po-chun, 25, is the third Taiwan student to have won the scholarship, a flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government that is granted to 45 international students every year in the science and technology category. This scholarship is regarded as special because Hsu, who graduated from National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in 2007, was educated only in Taiwan and is one of the few Taiwanese students to study for a Ph.D. after earning only a bachelor's degree, said Chen Tung-jung, executive officer of The Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan), one of some 50 bilateral organizations in the world established specifically to administer the program outside the U.S.

Germany foreign students financial aid

The democratic political parties in Germany have realized that the young scholars of today will be the decision-makers of tomorrow. One of the main goals of their political foundations is therefore the financial support of outstanding students. Providing foreign students with financial aid is very much in the interest of German politics, since whoever has studied in Germany is familiar with the market and culture - and will thus after graduation seek to establish and maintain contacts with German companies. The foundations especially promote exceptionally talented students. All these foundations expect a high degree of social activity and commitment on the part of applicants - as well as the willingness to put the knowledge gained in Germany to good use in their home country. In addition to financial support the foundations also try to offer general guidance and assistance in all academic and personal matters, such as a mentor at the university. They also offer visiting scholars the chance to take part in special events and seminars.

Information about scholarships in Germany

Many scholarship programs are intended specifically for foreign undergraduate and graduate students. It’s important to remember that all requests for information about scholarships and all applications for a scholarship should be sent in as early as possible, since there are a large number of people interested in receiving them. The amount of money paid out through a scholarship is usually calculated to cover normal living expenses. Even if the sum may at first appear high to someone living outside of Germany, you shouldn't forget that the cost of living is high in Germany, and it's very likely that there won't be a lot of money left at the end of the month. Also, if the person receiving the scholarship takes on a part time job they have to report this to the organization providing the scholarship. And that organization will then usually subtract the amount earned from the grant.

Scholarships for International Study in Germany

Imagine you've finally been admitted to a German university, but then discover that you don't have enough money to study and live in this country: A scholarship could be the solution. There are several organizations which offer financial support for a course of study in Germany. The magic term is “Promotion of talent”. Whereby “talent” does not strictly mean just intelligence or the ability to achieve good grades. Personality and social commitment are also important criteria when considering a person's eligibility for a scholarship. Some organizations award scholarships specifically to first-year students, while others only go to doctoral candidates. Several foundations and organizations are directly supported by the German government or industry, whereas others are run by the church or other private organizations.

More than half the world's population now lives in cities, and the rate of urbanization is accelerating. Cities produce roughly between 40% and 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. They are particularly vulnerable to climate change. The limited success of the December 2009 Copenhagen climate negotiations heightens the urgency of cities' efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. New York City has emerged as a global leader on this front. The foundational document for New York's initiatives is its ambitious long-term sustainability plan, PlaNYC 2030. Pursuant to the plan's climate change strategy, in 2008 the Mayor formed a NYC Panel on Climate Change (NPCC) and a NYC Climate Change Adaptation Task Force. The NPCC's charge is to provide climate projections and tools that the Task Force and City can use to devise strategies to protect critical infrastructure.

The United Arab Emirates is essentially a small handful of emirates that combine to form complete government. The UAE hangs out in the Middle East in the same neighborhood as Oman and Saudi Arabia, two other mild-mannered and hospitable destinations for students. The UAE is well known for its opulence and devotion to making money in petroleum and other high-end business and industry. The main destination for students is the American University in Dubai, one of the leading cosmopolitan cities. The David L. Boren Scholarships may not be overlooked especially in regards to a region in the Middle East, such as UAE. The federal government needs a lot of highly trained individuals who have intimate knowledge of security-sensitive languages, like Arabic, and foreign cultures including Islamic studies. Once again, these are ultra-competitive and highly advertised.
