China Experiencing in education

For this week’s enoVate theme topic, we have selected Chinese youth studying abroad as it gives a detailed glance into international and educational influences, both large factors in the lives of Chinese youth.
We lead off this week with a post from eno Marketing Supervisor, Faye Yu, a graduate from Shanghai’s Fudan University and a MBA recipient from UCLA in California. She outlines her decision factors to study abroad as well as the future impact this has on China’s economic growth.

Studying Abroad for Business Degree

Studying Abroad towards a Post-Grad Business Degree
Chinese Post-grad Business students choose to study abroad because:
1) The education at international business schools typically rank higher than in China.
2) There are plentiful opportunities to work overseas after graduation.
3) International business schools over a vast network and international experience.
Studying business internationally is much more expensive than studying for a PhD, and the chance of receiving a scholarship is much slimmer. However, most people view it as a form of investment to aid in their career development or to move up the corporate ladder. Because the application process is very intensive and most of these people are working full-time while applying, some Chinese business school applicants seek help from consultants, such as BeBeyond. Most of this group will also take classes to prepare for their GMAT and TOEFL tests.
We see more and more returnees to China in the business degree group especially during 2009 becaus:
1) Employment opportunities internationally decreased dramatically for MBAs in 2009. (Meaning Chinese MBA’s are more accessible for Chinese companies to hire)
2) Some industries, such as Consulting and Banking, are offering global level pay in China.
3) Most people in this group only live overseas for 2 years, thus not becoming as tied down.
Generally, I think China’s improved global status is very attractive for studying abroad Chinese to return and work in China. Most people would agree that there are more opportunities in China today, compared to the US or UK. Yet, the main barriers that keep Chinese study abroad students from returning is mostly the lower wages and (sometimes) lower living standards. Most of these returnees want to be treated better than local talents, or equally as expats. According to a friend who is involved in job recruitment in China, the trend is that the demand and pay level for returning study abroad Chinese is increasing, while the pay of expats is decreasing. It appears China may be experiencing a “brain gain” rather than a “brain drain”.

Face-to-face classroom exercises in UK

The diploma training is based upon a standard one-year diploma training which has been condensed into divided into three seven-day intensive stages. These can be spread out or close together, depending upon the needs of individual students. There are many dates to choose from, the first stage usually runs about six times each year. The total number of classroom hours, however, remains the same as a typical one-year diploma course.
Training focuses on practical face-to-face classroom exercises and group learning with rigorous online assessment following completion of the classroom training. Stage one focuses on the core skills of a hypnotherapist whereas stage 2 deals with behavioural psychology and interventions in hypnotherapy and stage 3 addresses cognitive concepts and techniques. The whole training provides a thorough grounding in modern cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy.

National Council for Hypnotherapy

People who wish to practice as hypnotherapists normally complete a diploma training approved by one of several independent professional bodies. Our diploma in cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy is externally accredited by the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), the two largest independent bodies in the field. Unlike most other courses, this diploma is also externally accredited by multiple professional bodies, including the Hypnotherapy Society, Hypnotherapy Association, and Register for Evidence-Based Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy (REBHP). The diploma is also approved by the British Psychological Society Learning Centre for the purposes of continuing professional development.

The Impact of Parental Debt on Children’s Education

This brings to mind a very simple question – why should the working class be made to pay for the bosses mistakes? It is a simple question which should make many bankers blush (and therefore ignore as a result!). Once that question is raised some may just accept that ‘that’s life’. Most people do not see a way out of the crisis, and so will keep their heads down and hope the crisis doesn’t knock on their door. A real lead should be shown by the labour movement but this doesn’t seem to be forthcoming, especially after twelve years of Blair and Brown. While state hand-outs to the bankers and their bonuses is acceptable press, any suggestion of nationalising say Woolworths, Visteon or Vestas in the interests of working people’s jobs is a closed book whilst big business calls the shots.
So we are left in a situation where the bankers and bosses are given a golden pat on the head when they ruin people’s livelihoods in the name of profit. The recession then subjects ordinary people to cut backs in public services – or even worse – redundancy. The chain of negative events does not end there; it is passed onto the next generation.

Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge university

Charges are set to be relabelled as "graduate contributions" - but the setting of a fee and the option of pre-payment would make it difficult for Liberal Democrats to say this was a type of graduate tax.
For instance, the Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, Julian Huppert, promised student voters at the general election: "I would vote to scrap student fees, whatever they may then be called."
Ed MilibandBusiness Secretary Vince Cable, responsible for higher education in England, has raised the idea of a graduate tax as an alternative - and his department says that such "progressive" options are still under discussion.
"The government has asked Lord Browne to look at a model in which contributions are fair and progressive and related to people's earnings amongst the options he is considering to reform the funding of universities. We will need to see what options and proposals are put forward by the review this autumn," said a spokeswoman.
